Controlled school leaders were recently updated on plans for an improved model of support at an event organised by the Controlled Schools' Support Council (CSSC).

At the event, titled 'Controlled schools – an equitable future. What next?' Education Minister Paul Givan MLA addressed members. Minister Givan had established a Taskforce in September 2024 to identify solutions to better support controlled schools. Chaired by Mark Baker, Chief Executive of the Controlled Schools' Support Council (CSSC), the Taskforce included senior representatives from the Department of Education (DE), Education Authority (EA) and CSSC. The Taskforce completed its review in December 2024 making recommendations on how more effective and equitable support and management could be provided to the sector.

The Minister informed the controlled school leaders present that he accepted the Taskforce recommendations.  In the first phase, a dedicated Controlled Schools Unit (CSU) will be set up within EA by September 2025. The CSU will introduce improvements in support.  Subject to the progress of primary legislation, a separate managing authority for controlled schools will then be formed.

You can access a recent statement from the Minister with more information here.

The members of the CSSC endorsed the Minister's commitment to improving support for controlled schools and supported the actions being taken at their 8th Annual General Meeting which followed the event.
